Discovering Paradise in Balapitiya
Kumu Beach

A serendipitous boutique hotel

Oozing with luxury is how one British broadsheet describes Kumu Beach and that’s certainly not an exaggeration. Straddling the south coast in Balapitiya, this 10 roomed boutique hotel is certainly in a class of its own. With its own stretch of boulder strewn sandy shoreline, Kumu Beach is a chic boutique hotel which is a cut above the rest. The specialties on offer here, apart from the superb crimson sunsets are the luxurious interiors, inventive cuisine, excellent service and restful ambiance.

This beachside retreat has four Ocean View Suites, four Ocean View Bedrooms and two Kumu Bedrooms. The beautifully styled rooms are equipped with all modern conveniences and the en-suite bathrooms with pebble floor shower areas add a touch of outdoors, indoors. All the bedrooms have private balconies or garden terraces which offer splendid views of the palm fringed cerulean sea.

Clean lines dominate this aesthetically sound hotel while a contemporary design vibe runs through the property with vibrant splashes of colour introduced by way of beautifully designed batik cushions and batik fabric panels. Dotted in various parts of the hotel are floating metallic fish and the piece de résistance is the greenish copper globe sculpture by artist Sanjay Geekiyanage.

Contemporary and creative cuisine is de-rigueur at Kumu Beach with many of the dishes on offer promoting healthy eating. The food is fresh, wholesome and deliciously paired to complement the surroundings and the great sea views of this paradisaical abode. The menu champions a variety of seafood and local produce which are prepared to exceedingly high standards. The a la carte menu contains a fusion of local and international cuisine prepared by exacting chefs.

Kumu Beach which is perched on a headland has an ample garden, an oasis of emerald to beautifully complement the vivid hues of foam crested blue waves that crash against the dramatic boulders on the beach. A 23m long infinity pool separates the garden from the beach a few metres below. The pool is a dream to plunge into when one needs to escape the heat of the equatorial sun.

The pool is dotted with comfortable sun loungers and the staff are always on hand to serve you a selection of juices, cocktails and mocktails. Suffice to say sundowners at Kumu Beach are unsurpassable. While many come to completely unwind and relax at Kumu Beach, for those who want to venture out, the mask making town of Ambalangoda is a short distance away, as is the UNESCO heritage site of Galle Fort. For those who want to indulge in watersports, Bentota which has many water sports centres is also a short ride away.

Providing a calm and restful ambiance with gratifying service standards coupled with an excellent choice of food, Kumu Beach is a haven for those seeking a serendipitous experience in Sri Lanka.
