TOO GLAM TO GIVE A DAMN!

Believe me, a lot of people admire outlandish and unconventional dressers. While outwardly they may be sighing and tutting at someone’s offbeat sense of style, secretly they are enviously admiring these fashion rebels who wear what they damn well please, and don’t feel any need to conform to fashion conventions. There is a compelling fascination in seeing another person revelling in their personal form of self-expression – after all, you are what you wear. If truth be told, despite their apparent disdain, these on-lookers are most likely wishing they had the confidence to step out and array themselves with similar gusto.

And why not? Fashion is more than just an elaborate game of dressing up. It exemplifies who we are and what we believe and enables us to communicate these values to others. The act of making a high-profile fashion statement should be personal and fun while offering a glimpse into our own individuality. Most significantly for the person wearing the clothes, it's about being able to realise your own vision and values in what you choose to put on, and shedding the shackles that restrict you.

The clothes we wear may often be dictated by cultural preconceptions, but these may have little to do with who the wearer is in reality. Whether a man or a woman thinks of their clothes in terms of ‘fashion’, or more in terms of practicality, or indeed rarely thinks about them at all, we all project an explicit image through how we choose to represent ourselves.

From Vivienne Westwood, with her trademark mix of punk, new romantic and sumptuously elegant ballgowns, through Lady Gaga's iconic avant-garde fashion moments, to the American reality TV series “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” – where the ladies sport lime green sequin-embellished dresses, hair tinsel, crimson latex, bedazzled barrettes and $25,000 sunglasses – conjuring up alternative knockout outfits is all part of the embodiment of a fearless and unapologetic self-assurance that’s necessary to stand out from the crowd.

Free-spirited and creative people today are not afraid to push the boundaries and break outdated society rules, and they don’t worry that they may be labelled ‘fashion victims’. These fashion pioneers live with the notion that dressing out of the ordinary in eccentric garb is a good deal cooler than looking like the rest of the population, and they do it every day of their lives.

Why should dressing up be reserved for special occasions only? Let’s put some extra effort into what we wear, life's too short to blend in!

Five Alternative Fashion Trends For 2022

  • glitter and sparkle for a futuristic vibe – metallic colours, sequins and maximalist styling
  • catsuits – animal prints, graphic patterns, mesh and velvet, leather and cut-outs
  • neon accessories and ultra-bright bags – bold pops of colour crafted into unexpected shapes
  • the gladiator sandal – neoclassical lace-up, knee-high sandals, also dressy flats and classy open-toe sandals for both men and women
  • chandelier earrings – long, elaborate dangling tiers of gemstones, crystals, precious metals or beads
