Cruising the ocean

Words: Tina Edward Gunawardhana

Yacht a life! Cruising around the Indian Ocean, feeling the salty breeze in your face and sipping a glass of bubbly while admiring the palm fringed coastline of Sri Lanka is a dream that can become a reality thanks to a range of great cruises offered by Sail Lanka. Long considered the exclusive domain of the rich and the famous, cruising the ocean has been made more affordable for your average citizen Perera who can live it up and experience a water based holiday while having some change to spare.

Staking a claim as the first ever private enterprise to offer luxury sailing breaks around the Sri Lankan coast, Sail Lanka which currently has a fleet of 10 yachts is an enterprise initiated by Pierre Pringiers, a visionary man who following the 2004 Tsunami decided to dedicate his life to ocean based economic development through developing a yachting industry in
Sri Lanka. A spin off of the Building a Future Foundation, Sail Lanka aims to create and promote sailing as a new eco-friendly activity on the island. The company’s ethos is   based on a set of projects and actions they conduct as a socially responsible tourism company to share Sri Lanka’s wealth of marine, cultural and human heritage with their guests.

The many sailing experiences they offer provide an exclusive advantage to stunning landscapes, pristine beaches along 1,340 kilometers of coastline and 10 national parks showcasing an abundance of wildlife. The surrounding  waters abound with whales, dolphins, tropical fish and other aspects of ocean life. Another advantage of a sailing holiday is that the warm waters of the Indian Ocean are perfect for relaxed and safe water sports and activities.
