Mountbatten Bungalow

Excited to review our first location in the region I did some research on the location before heading to the bungalow and was surprised to learn that it was very close to my home. It took us only 12 minutes to drive there from the Kandy town. We drove up the Heeressagala road and came to the of the road and found this beautiful old bungalow at the end of our journey. I felt as if we took a 12 minute trip to Nuwara Eliya. The garden and the bungalow looked like a place from Nuwara Eliya.

We were greeted by a polite gentleman at the gate who directed us to the car park. We parked at their lovely little carpark overlooking magnificent view the hotel had to boast. It was given shade by a large tree and had a few seating areas for the guest to enjoy the view or even the beautiful tree that stood in the middle of the car park.

Once we arrived at the reception for check-in we were greeted with a hot towel and a cup of hot sweet cinnamon tea.

We were then taken to our Garden Chalet which was a lovely little wooden chalet overlooking the forest. It was tastefully decorated with all the amenities we required. Their beautiful wooden bathroom was equipped with a bathtub and a high-pressure shower.

My favorites of the room were the private balcony overlooking the forest and the pressure point slippers they provided guest to wear inside the room.

Colombo has many places that have infinity pools but this bungalow had a pool as I've never seen before. It was an infinity pool overlooking the mountains. The view from the pool has to be the highlight of this hotel and I can understand why Lord Louis Mountbatten picked this spot to build his private residence. This place is simply beautiful.

We then went for lunch which was served next to the poolside. We enjoyed a steak that was prepared to perfection accompanied with pasta and dessert. The view of this bungalow was nothing short of breathtaking and we were lucky to enjoy our meal watching such a beautiful view.

Dinner was served inside the main bungalow. The dimly lit dining room was decorated with historical maps of Ceylon and antiques. We enjoyed an absolutely delicious 3-course meal.

Breakfast was served in their beautifully maintained garden. We went with the Sri Lankan option as we had already tried their western dishes and I must say that it was one of the best string hopper meals I have ever tasted. Every single curry they served overflowed with local flavor and tasted perfect.

What we enjoyed most about this Bungalow was how clean it was, the staff was extremely polite and attentive, the bungalow was well maintained and still holds historical charm from many years back. This place was so quiet and peaceful that I was surprised that such a place existed just 12 minutes from the busiest town in Kandy.
