A Million Dreams

The debut exhibition of Swendrini Gunasekara opened at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery recently.
Picking up her brushes after a lapse of almost 20 years, the artist said " As I was getting back into painting after a very long time...I didn't restrict myself to a particular theme, medium or subject. I gave way to whatever inspired me and moved me and also experimented with many mediums for this exhibition. Therefore, it is in actual fact a million dreams captured onto canvas and paper in oils, acrylics, charcoal, watercolour, crayon...pen and ink...everything!!! "My work is mostly inspired by local/ island aspects. From the seascapes to the fragipani, the stupas to the tuk Tuks, the mangosteens to the elephants...a majority of my artwork comes to life from the inspiration I draw from this beautiful island we live on... Much of these million dreams have definitely been influenced by local nuances and island living."

Even though A Million Dreams was her debut solo exhibition, she had also invited her nephew and God son young artist Eyan Pereira to exhibit with her. His work concentrated mainly on watercolour works of birds, a favourite subject of the young artist!
